Maccabee & Sons
GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED
Though a symbol of the tribe of Judah, we include the lions lurking here in the background as icons for strength and a reference to our Hanukkah hero, Judah Maccabee. (The Maccabees are believed to be from the tribe of Levi.) In 2Mac.11, the Maccabees are said to have “hurled themselves like lions against the enemy.”
Who fought Antiochus, tell us please? Maccabee & Sons, of course! The names of the Maccabee men encircle raised hammers and the exclamation “Dedicated!” while below it says “We bow down to no one,” a reference to part of the Hellenistic hullabaloo that led to Hanukkah.
